Wyke and Lanehouse Surgery Friends

We have been working with a company called Altogether Better, who help GP Practices to work with patients who would like to give some of their time helping the practice and its patients. We sent a text out in October last year, asking for patients interested in becoming a “Practice Champion” to contact Altogether Better direct by email. We are really pleased to say that we now have a dedicated group of 15 people who have offered their time and have attended training workshops and meetings since January of this year. They would like to be known as Wyke and Lanehouse Surgery Friends (WLSF). They are very passionate and enthusiastic and have lots of wonderful ideas about how they can help our Practice and patients.

One of their first projects is Tuesday Tea Together. They are holding tea, coffee and cake sessions every Tuesday afternoon at Wyke Surgery from 2 until 4 pm. Anyone who would like to join us for a cuppa and a chat, you will be most welcome, our “Friends” would love to meet you. We have a regular group of patients who come to the Wyke Surgery on a Tuesday afternoon and they are enjoying the company and conversation! If you would like to come to the surgery but don’t have transport, please give the surgery a ring on 831330 and we will see if we can help with giving you a lift. If there is no one there to take your call, please leave a message and we will get back to you.

Some of our members are helping at the locality Leg Clubs. They are booking patients into the clinics and making tea and coffee. They are also helping with the fund raising by selling raffle tickets.

One of our members has put together a “patient information directory” to help guide our patients to find support groups, community events and club’s or meetings etc. A copy can be found in each surgery waiting room and one will be posted on the website soon.

We have members who are happy to visit vulnerable and lonely patients in their homes to offer them support and company on a regular basis.

We have also recently acquired a piece of ground on the allotment at the top of Rylands Lane. We have members and patients who have already expressed interest in helping with growing flowers and vegetables and we are hoping to link up with the horticultural society next to the allotment.

One of our members is our Digital Champion, she will help patients who would like to become more confident using computers and in particular with using the internet.

As our programme progresses, we would like to offer help and support to patients in many different ways.

If you are interested in any of the above or would like to join and help the group, please contact Teresa at Wyke Surgery on 01305 831330.
